Transport for London has sent out an update explaining that London has an urgent air quality problem that’s impacting the health of Londoners, mainly caused by polluting vehicles. That’s why the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be expanding across all London boroughs from 29 August 2023.

Londoners are developing life-changing illnesses such as cancer, asthma and lung disease, as well as a higher risk of dementia in older people. Air pollution contributes to the premature death of thousands of Londoners every year, with the greatest number of deaths in outer London boroughs.

The ULEZ has already made a significant difference, helping to reduce harmful nitrogen dioxide pollution by nearly half in central London. But action needs to be taken now to help the five million Londoners in outer boroughs have clearer air to breathe too.

More than four out of five vehicles already meet the emissions standards, but if you drive a petrol vehicle over 16 years old, or a diesel vehicle over six years old, you need to check if you’re affected by the new zones.
