In September 2021 the London Legacy Development Corporation in partnership with Newham Council and Transport for London, launched their first consultation about the future of Stratford Station. Since then, they have been developing ideas for the long-term improvements and are now back to hear your thoughts on their ideas and developments on the project.

They want to hear what local residents, visitors, passengers and businesses think about the station now and how it could be improved in the future. They are undertaking this work in partnership with LB Newham, TfL and Network Rail.

As you know Stratford Station sits at the heart of the town centre and is vitally important to the people who use and rely on it. However, the station is struggling to cope with the number of people using it. The layout can also be difficult to navigate, connections into the station and across it from Stratford to Westfield and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park could be a lot better. This work will also consider how Stratford Station and Stratford International Station could work better together.

The station is a key interchange being heavily used by people who live and work in the area. As more new homes and businesses come to Stratford and as visitor numbers increase, the station will need significant investment to keep working for people.

Over 128million passengers use the station each year, its current layout means people can’t move about as freely compared to other stations in London and nationally. Short term work has already been taking place to help people use the existing station better. However, longer-term we need to create a station that is fit for the next 100 years and matches the scale of ambition and quality of public space that people living, working and visiting Stratford deserve.

As Stratford and east London grow we know that use of the station will also grow. Investment will be needed to provide a modern service for passengers, creating better routes for people across the station connecting Stratford to the jobs and opportunities on and around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

It will take time to plan, design and deliver the major improvements needed. Current forecasts show that these more significant improvements will be needed from 2031. Starting the planning now means there is more time to get this right and make sure there is a coordinated approach with Newham Council and their work on Stratford Town Centre. This work will also consider the future of Stratford International Station which has real potential for more services, potentially to mainland Europe, and to have better connections to Stratford Station.
