Get Started: Big Ideas – LGBTQI+ asylum seekers in the UK
In this lecture, for LGBT History Month, we'll be joined by Claire Fletcher from the UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group, a charity that promotes equality and dignity for LGBTQI+* people seeking asylum in the UK.
Due to the levels of persecution, harassment and violence LGBTQI+ people still experience all around the world, there is a need for LGBTQI+ people to seek safety in countries other than their own. In the UK, asylum claims based on sexual identity first came under-recognised refugee protection in 1999. However, LGBTQI+ people face unique barriers in seeking asylum in the UK, which will be explored in this talk.
