Waterworks Bridge Works

Plans to deliver the new Waterworks Bridge which will provide a better connection to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Pudding Mill Allotments, and to help facilitate the forthcoming new development at Bridgewater Triangle will begin in September 2024.
16 September 2024

Set to bring significant improvements to the local community, the Bridgewater Triangle development as a whole will create a more connected neighbourhood, with around 600 new homes, spaces for community learning, shops, cafes, and leisure facilities, as well as outdoor space and enhanced local infrastructure.   The enabling works for the wider development include the delivering of a new, stronger, steel bridge over the Waterworks River, which will act as a gateway to the development site, as well as the completion of river wall landscaping and a new tow path.  Our works are due to commence imminently and complete Winter 2025.

What to expect during construction
Works will include the diversion of existing utilities, installation of piled foundations for the new bridge, construction of new bridge abutments, installation of a temporary bridge for the diversion of existing services, demolition of the existing Waterworks Bridge, construction of a new steel bridge, and construction of the new tow path including associated landscaping and lighting works.  To deliver the project, we will be completing several phases of construction work in the area over the next 18 months. Below are the key dates and activities we have planned. We are committed to keeping you informed and minimising disruption as much as possible throughout this period.

  • Site Setup: Mid-late September 2024
Initial preparations will begin, including setting up the site and equipment. We will be carrying out works to reroute some existing water and electrical kiosks. A minor diversion of the cycle path on the west side of the river is required by 13 September.
  • Cycle/footpath adjustments: September 2024
By the end of September there will be more significant adjustments to the cycle and footpaths. Alternative routes will be clearly marked.
Noted within the attached map (below), the cycle/foot path which connects the bridge with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (marked below as U03) will close at the end of September, and pedestrians and cyclists will be rerouted via the newly opened path (marked as U07).
  • Existing bridge and underpass works: September 2024
w/c 15 September – the existing bridge to close
30 September – the underpass will close (see map)
  • Utility bridge: January - August 2025
A temporary utility bridge will be installed to facilitate construction while maintaining services.
  • Existing bridge demolition and new bridge installation: February to June 2025
Demolition of the existing bridge is scheduled for Spring 2025, with the installation of the new bridge planned for Summer 2025.
  • Landscape works: Autumn 2025
Landscaping will take place to enhance the area, including the development of a landscaped river edge.
  • Project Completion: The new bridge will be open in Winter 2025
